Sanctuary Trek - 2Nights 3Days
Explore with us two neighboring Protected Areas, Peechi and Chimmony Wildlife
Sanctuaries through a two nights and three days trek in the company of
the local indigenous people, the Malayas. The rich biodiversity of both
the PAs and the breathtaking beauty of the lush moist deciduous and semi
evergreen jungles will make the medium to hard trek memorable. The trek
starts from Peechi and ends at Chimmony on day three. Throughout the trek
ecoguides from the local indigenous community stay with you. Your safety
is assured by the Forest and Wildlife Department by providing the services
of an armed park guard with communication equipment. The company of our
experienced naturalist will make the trek more informative. This trek
also helps in the patrolling of some remote regions of both these PAS.
Day One
On arrival at Peechi Wildlife Sanctuary by eight in the morning, we
will visit the interpretation center for an introduction to the PAs
and their rich biodiversity. We then cross the Peechi Lake in a boat/raft
to reach the foothills of the jungle. Our trek starts from here. Packed
lunch will be served during the trek. We reach Camp One at Valmannu
by noon. Expect to see wild animals like Asiatic Elephant, Indian Gaur,
Sambar, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Nilgiri Langur, Mongoose, Wild boar,
Barking Deer, Bonnet Macaque etc. You may also see some unpublicized
wildlife like Flying Lizard, Flying Snake, Flying Frog etc. Our ecoguides
and naturalist will set up camp. Simple vegetarian meals will be prepared
and served. In the evening explore the tropical jungle with your hosts.
Take a dip in a tropical mountain stream. Overnight in tents and sleeping
bags.
Day Two
Early morning we do some birding around our camp. Chimmony and Peechi
have a rich avifauna which is not explored. You may be lucky enough
to record a bird for the first time. This goes for butterflies too.
After breakfast we trek to Camp Two at Mulapara in Chimmony Wildlife
Sanctuary. We can encounter some steep climbs. Lunch at camp. After
a relaxing break we visit a patch of rain forest. Acquaint with the
incredible diversity of a rain forest. Back in the camp in the evening
learn to cook the local way. Exchange worldviews with your hosts over
dinner. Overnight in tents and sleeping bags.
Day Three
Wake up with tea and snacks then accompany your naturalist for a birding
trip around the camp site. After breakfast we trek to Chimmony. Lunch
at Chimmony. Your route passes through some ideal wildlife habitats.
Meet representatives from the indigenous community who run this ecotourism
programme and directly give your feedbacks and suggestions. Visit the
souvenir shop run by them. Take back wild honey, herbal hair and body
care powders, T-Shirts, cork sandals, handmade post cards etc. and contribute
to the community development fund.
